Savannah's modern history begins in 1733, the year General James Oglethorpe and 120 passengers aboard the "Anne" landed on a bluff along the Savannah River in February. The General named the 13th and final colony "Georgia" after England's King George II. Savannah became the Colonies first city and it is widely considered the first planned city. General Oglethorpe designed the city in a series of grids consisting of 24 squares of which 21 still remain today.
